11th Annual Town of Herndon Calendar Photography Competition

Who Can Enter

Professional, amateur, and student photographers. Photographers do not need to live in Herndon to participate.

What to Enter

  • All photographs must be taken within the corporate limits of the Town of Herndon.

  • Special consideration will be given to entries that depict:

    • People participating in town events,

    • People interacting in locations throughout the town,

    • Community events with people clearly identifiable in Herndon-specific settings,

    • Seasonal images of the town, particularly those that include people.

  • All photographs must be full-color photographs. No black and white photographs.

  • All photographs must be horizontal (landscape).

  • For a high-quality image, to be suitable for the Town Calendar, the image should be horizontal 11.25” x 8.75” at a minimum of 300 dpi (or 3375 x 2625 pixels) JPEG (.jpg) format.

  • All photographs must be the photographer’s own original work.

  • No computer-generated/assisted art (stylized, hi-dynamic range, Photoshop, etc.).

  • The photographer must have the expressed permission of all easily identifiable people in their photographs. See attached release form.

  • The photographer grants permission for the Town of Herndon, HCTV, and Arts Herndon to use the images for publicity. Photo credit will be given whenever possible.

  • The photographer grants permission for the Town of Herndon, HCTV, and Arts Herndon to crop images if needed.

  • Each photographer can enter 2 images in the competition.

  • Images must be submitted electronically by email  info@artsherndon.com Use the following format in the entry information and when naming files: Entrant Initials Title Of Artwork size.jpg, where size is the unframed image size. For example FML Caboose 14x11.jpg

Judging

Photographs will be professionally judged, and 30 finalists selected and exhibited online and in the Post Gallery at Arts Herndon,  The Calendar finalists will be selected by the Town for inclusion in the 2022 Calendar. The decision of the judges is final.

Arts Herndon visitors  can  vote for the People’s Choice Award during the Exhibition

Rights

By entering the Town of Herndon Calendar Photo Competition, the entrant hereby grants to the Town of Herndon a nonexclusive, irrevocable, royalty-free license to reproduce, distribute, and publicly display the photographs submitted to the Competition. The entrant also grants Arts Herndon, HCTV, and the Town of Herndon permission to use images for publicity purposes, including postcards and advertisements. The entrant retains all other rights to any photograph submitted, including ownership. All photographs used by Arts Herndon, HCTV, and the Town of Herndon will be credited with the caption "Photo Name by Photographer Name” whenever possible.

Agreement

By entering the competition, the photographer agrees to abide by all competition rules. If selected as a finalist, the photographer agrees to participate in the exhibit and meet the exhibit requirements. The photographer warrants and represents that s/he owns the copyright to the photographs submitted for this exhibit and that those works do not infringe the copyrights, trademarks, rights of privacy or any other rights of any third parties or of any other person. The entrant also agrees to hold Arts Herndon, HCTV, the Town of Herndon, and their employees and volunteers harmless. Failure to comply with these rules constitutes withdrawal from the competition.


Information and Exhibition Requirements for Finalists

The photographers whose photographs are selected as finalists in the Herndon Town Calendar Photo Competition will be notified by email by June 18, 2021.

Photographs selected as finalists in the Competition will be exhibited online and in Arts Herndon’s Post Gallery. Photographers are encouraged to offer their finalist photographs for sale during the exhibit at a price of their choosing. The People’s Choice Award will be announced at the reception. All entrants and finalists are encouraged to attend the reception. The finalists are encouraged to publicize the exhibit and the reception to their patrons, family, and friends.

Framing and Matting: Finalist photographs must be framed for the exhibit. The frames must be wired for hanging. Double-glass float-frames are not permitted. Wire should be mounted about 1/3 of the way down from the top edge of the artwork and tight across the back of the frame.

Any photo offered for sale must be matted as well as framed. A general guideline is for the mat to be at least as wide as the frame.

Photo Size: The print size of photographs in the exhibit should be at least 10” x 8” and no larger than 30” x 20”. These sizes are for the images, the finished frame size can be larger.

Labeling: The photographer is responsible for labeling the framed photograph with the photographer’s name, the title, the location, and price. Please place this label on the back of the framed image.

Sale of Framed and Matted Photographs: All works featured in the exhibit will be available for sale at a price of the photographer’s choosing unless marked “Not for Sale” or “NFS.”

Delivery and pickup of Photographs.

  • The photographer is responsible for the delivery and pick-up of framed artwork.

  • Photographs will be displayed until the end of the show. Buyers will be asked to delay the pick-up of the artwork until the end of the show.

  • Photographs not picked up within 2 weeks of the exhibition closing, will be considered a donation to Arts Herndon.

Commission: A 25% commission will be paid to Arts Herndon for artwork sold during the exhibit. Artists agree to complete an IRS W-9 form, if required.
