BLUE Exhibit

Awards Reception: October 30, 2018, 11:00 AM – 4:00 PM

Reception Saturday, November 3, 2018, 7-9pm

The more than nine painters who have called ArtSpace their weekly studio home for several years, come from a variety of painting traditions in both abstract and representational art.

One strong influence comes from the Washington Color School, which itself developed from Color Field Painting.  In the original movement, artists explored ways to use large solid areas of paint in abstract works.  This is exemplified by the work of Mark Rothko and Helen Frankenthaler.  The Washington Color School included Morris Louis, Sam Gilliam, Alma Thomas and many others.

Representational painters also influence many of the artists in the group including:  Franz Marc, Edward Hopper, and Georgia O’Keefe, to name a few.

The artists in this group have resolved to have a common theme to tie their work together and have decided to focus on color as inspired by Color Field Theory. The color blue is of special significance to landscape painters, representing both sky and water and many aspects of nature as seen in the work of impressionists.

The theme of the show therefore will be “Blue” which also leaves room for individual interpretation which might include:  mood, music such as “Blues”, and reflection.   The interaction of the color blue with other colors in line, shape, and pattern will also be exhibited.
