Looming Connections

Awards Reception: March 5, 2019, 7:00 PM – 9:00 PM

Looming Connections was a solo show focusing on the artwork of Maryland artist Alyssa Imes. This series reflected the connections we make with people and how they shape our lives. The sculptures and drawings reference the formation of relationships and the interconnectedness of culture. The artist sees the yarn as time and life, and the knots as experiences we share. The looms are the places we meet people. The pieces of fabric are knitted from the sculptures themselves so the iron looms create support and help mechanically weave fabric from an individual strand of string. Sculptures will be made from cast iron and other metals with knitted fabric on them will fill the gallery. Some sculptures are abstract and others include molded pieces of the human form while the drawings are on raw paper with earthen colors. Alyssa thrives on making personal connections and this work was inspired by the personal experiences she makes with people.

Alyssa Imes has previously exhibited at the Cooley Gallery in Leesburg, VA as well as exhibits in West Virginia, Alabama and Maryland. She is a graduate of Shepherd University and is part of the Washington Sculpture Group. In the Fall Alyssa will be embarking on her Post Graduate studies at the University of Maryland, College Park.
